Considering a Dogo Puppy?

01-29-03jordan-battle-5-weeks.jpg
Jordan (Dexter) & Battle (Sancho) 1-29-03 5 weeks

Dogos are a great responsibility.  They grow quickly and may take 2-3 years to fully mature, both physically and mentally.

Although this is a powerful breed of dog that demands respect, they are also very sensitive.  Dogos do not respond well to harsh tones or treatment.  They seem to want to know "why" you want them to perform in a certain way.  I have noticed that responses are almost immediate when they are "asked" to sit, rather than "demanded" to sit, etc.  If a dogo looses respect for someone, it may be next to impossible to ever earn it back.   Respect does not mean that you treat the dogo like royalty.  It means that both you and the dogo know where each stands in the relationship.

It is essential that they know their number in the household. Ex: Mom=1, Dad=2, kid=3, dogo=4.  Dogos like to know the rules, and if you do not establish them, you will have a problem.

Dogos have a very high prey drive.  They were bred to be hunting dogs, capable of taking on Boar and Puma.

If you are not planning on hunting with your dogo, it is a MUST that you keep your dogo busy through some other avenue.

Although a dogo puppy will get along with most other dogs and cats, once they start maturing (around 2 years of age), be prepared for an attitude change.

If you are still ready for a pup.......

Choosing A Breeder
Please spend a reasonable amount of time in selecting the breeder from whom your next best friend will come from.
There are many "breeders" who are involved with Dogos for all the wrong reasons.  Steer clear of backyard breeders, puppy brokers and puppymill breeders.
Backyard Breeder is a term given to a "breeder" whose dogs have not "left their backyard."  The dogs may live in the house and go on walks and family outings, but are not involved in any other dog activities, nor have been screened for genetic disorders prior to breeding.
Responsible breeders are active with showing/hunting/obedience/agility and/or other breed-related sports, thus keeping in contact with other breeders and fanciers of the breed and therefore have a realistic idea of how their dogs compare to others of the same the breed.  Responsible breeders also perform genetic health tests on their dogs prior to breeding.

Suspect a puppy mill or backyard breeder when:

o       The breeder asks you no questions

o       The breeder is offended by questions you ask

o       The breeder cannot offer proof of genetic testing of sire and dam

o       The breeder does not want you to see the kennel

o       The sire and dam have no titles (Ch, obedience, tracking, agility, etc.)

o       You can smell the kennels as you get out of your car

o       Puppies are registered with registries other than FCI (FCPR), UKC or AKC FSS.

Stay away from registeries such as NKC, CKC (Continental Kennel Club), UKC,I (Universal Kennel Club, International), APR, APRI, DRA, FIC & WWKC
